Yesteryear Collection

(Special Edition) The year 1998 marks the 50th anniversary of one of the rarest and most celebrated automobiles of all time. In a half century, the Tucker has come to represent not only an automobile built with foresight, innovation and safety, but also a powerful expression of the individual against the establishment, the "little guy" in competition with those much mightier than he. Indeed, for many, the Tucker is a modern version of the ancient story of David and Goliath, a story of triumph against seemingly insurmountable odds. Preston Tucker's "torpedo-style" automobile was the most innovative, futuristic car of its day. It was equipped with a rear-mounted, 335 cubic inch, aluminum alloy, flat six-cylinder engine that provided superb weight distribution and delivered 166 horsepower to drive the 3,600 pound vehicle. The heavy weight was part of Tucker's overall focus on safety. To say that Tucker was far ahead of the crowd in 1948 with this emphasis on safety is no exaggeration. Disc brakes, a padded dashboard, a front passenger crash compartment, pop-out windshield and a centrally-pivoting headlight were all aspects of his farsighted preoccupation with passenger safety. Only 51 Tuckers were produced - adding greatly to its mystique and collectibility - and no two were exactly alike. Even the transmissions came in three flavours: Ypsilanti, Cord and the R-1 Rice Tuckermatic. The car's customized quality has contributed mightily to its legendary status, which seems to speak to the individualist in all of us! Now the celebrated 1948 Tucker "48" is re-created in a special golden anniversary DINKY die-cast model. Precision engineered in the 1:43 scale, your 1948 Tucker "48" is produced by - and available from - Matchbox Collectibles, the greatest name in die-cast.
